Rising Damp TreatmentRising damp is moisture from the ground travelling up through the walls of a building by capillary action, seeking a means of evaporation. The water also contains salt thats also travels up through the wall. This type of moisture only occurs on ground level.
Rising damp can occur after a result of a breakdown in the damp proof course. A properly installed damp proof course will prevent ground water from travelling up the wall by creating a barrier in the wall, made from impermeable & water resistant materials. If left untreated, rising damp can lead to serious problems in your property such as destroying decorative finishes within the property or leading to structural damage. It can also contribute to increased heat loss. As with most forms of damp, long-term exposure to damp is injurious to health. |
The treatment of rising damp is a 2 part system, typically the contaminated plaster needs to be:
We are aware of some companies advising clients that the walls can just be drilled & injected then the walls will naturally dry out. If the protimeter is reading damp above 22% this is absolutely not the case, the contaminated render will hold salts from the moisture & unless this render is changed will not dry out, even over a few months. √ Re plastering can also be done immediately after chemical injection. √ We use Renderguard Gold whilst re plastering which is a damp proof additive to allow the wall to breath whilst drying out & is a salt neutraliser which kills off any contamination. √ Therefore the job can all be done in one go. In our experience just injecting walls which have rising damp is not the correct method & no guarantee can be insurance backed if this is the case. The chemical stops the damp getting any worse but the plaster is still contaminated with hydroscopic salts attracting moist air. Please contact the BWPDA for more information. |
